Overview

ECVC’s mission is “to help people with disabilities attain a higher quality of life through achievement of their vocational goals.” This mission is accomplished through a competent staff  working with the individuals (clients) to insure that they find the best possible job according to their skills and desires.
More than 300 people with disabilities receive work training each year through the Eastern Carolina Vocational Center, a private, not for profit corporation.

“Our whole purpose is to help people obtain jobs they would not be able to get on their own,” says Lisa Ward-Ross, Vice-President of Rehabilitation Services. “Working for us gives them work experience they would not get on their own and our job placement staff helps them move from here to a job in the community.”
ECVC provides short term rehabilitation training and long term employment for people with disabilities. It also offers free, on-site job training for employers who hire workers with disabilities.
“We provide a job coach to go with the person to work at no cost to the employer. Some of our people have limited reading abilities so we do a lot of accommodating in our training methods to help them to learn the job,” says Ward-Ross.
ECVC offers three primary programs designed to do this: Vocational Program, Adult Developmental and Vocational Program (ADVP) and Supported Employment.

People with disabilities represent the single largest and most diverse minority in the U.S. One out of five Americans has a disability or approximately 49 million people. People with disabilities have better attendance and are more committed to their jobs. Families with a disabled member are more likely to support businesses that are disability friendly. Seventy two percent of working age people with disabilities have high school diplomas or a higher degree. Most people with disabilities want to work. Two out of three people with disabilities who are unemployed, say they would prefer to work. People with disabilities work or are trained to work in all kinds of professions. Tax incentives are in place to encourage employers to hire people with disabilities. The best reason to hire a person with disabilities is because that person is qualified.
